I agree, the benefits of exercise are many indeed - but this commentary segment was looking specifically at the effects of running marathons. Also this blog post is only a brief summary of what we talked about on the show, so to hear the full story, where we do mention the benefits of exercise - Listen to our podcast here: http://rrrfm.libsyn.com/einstein-a-go-go-podcast-17-july-2011

"It’s stressful to the body and there have been sudden death cases of marathon runners. However in the 1970′s exercise physiologist Dr Tom Bassler claimed that running marathons provided protection against heart disease. But the autopsy results of a marathon runner, Jim Fixx, who died of a massive heart attack during a race in 1984 showed a complete blockage of his coronary artery"

It never fails to impress me how much bad science I hear on Einstein-A-Go in the presenter's commentary.

This marathon runner had heart disease, that runner didn't, never got cancer and was fit and health to 100 years… anecdotal uncontrolled commentary!

The benefits of exercise, including running are many — if sensibly pursued. They will not overcome the problems of bad diet, ie. the SAD diet. Speaking generally, heart disease is caused by the consumption of animal protein, and also animal fats, and removing animal protein and eating 10% plant protein and 10% plant sourced fats will reverse heart disease much more effectively that any known drug therapy.

Read the China Study by T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D. He (et al) conducted the largest epidemiological study ever undertaken and spent a life time studying the effects of nutrition on cancer (all cancers), heart disease, obesity, diabetes (especially type 2 which is 100% reversible with dietary changes as demonstrated variously by Dr. Neal Barnard & Dr. Dean Ornish & Dr. McDougal & Dr. T. Colin Campbell in decade long studies.
